Heat Stress

I dont have tell you its hot.Anyone who is working outside in the heat needs to be careful.A friend went down last week while loading some iron .He remains in the hospital and may not make it.If you are working outside take plenty of breaks and drink lots of water. This is one of the hottest years on record, so we all need to be careful wether we are at home or work.Be safe and as always call me with any electrical questions you may have 361 433-6039.

Permits

If your electrical service is downed by a mother nature or some other happening you are going to need an electrical permit. This is usally the responsability of the electrician you hire to do the work.If you are the home owner and are going to do the job yourself you can get a home owners permit, but it still needs to be inspected and must meet code.A permit is only required in the city limits. As always if you have a question cal me at 361 433-6039.Thanks for looking at my blog.

Panels and Meters

There are many homes in the Victoria area that have old and outdated electrical services. An electrical service is the outside panel and meter coming into your home.In homes that 40 years or older, Federal Pacific panels have been installed which are not made any more. You can still get breakers for them but they are more expencive and harder to find.Generally older homes have 60 to 100 amp services which may have been fine 40 years ago but now we have more appliances and A/C s ,which demand more electricity.I recomend upgrading your service to 200 amp.It will cost you in the short term but will add value safety and protection to your home.As always if you have any questions , give me a call at 361 433-6039.John

Air Conditioners

Every year durring the summer months i get calls from coustmers about a/c tripping the breaker.Small window units can pull between 8 to 15 amps.If anything else is on the same cicuit it can trip the breaker. If you are going to have several small ac cooling your house itis a good idea to have them on there own breaker. This requires running a isolated circuit from the panel box.The best bet if you have the money is to run central air for the whole house. The savings could show up in your electric bill.As always if you have any questions give me a call John 361 433-6039

Generators

I have been getting calls asking about generators. When purchasing a generator there is no need to buy one to run the whole house. If the power does go out it usally just for a few days.A portable genertor may be your best choice, they are easy to store and are less money than an in ground unit. Be sure to keep a running generator away from your house and in a well vetilated area.If you have any questions call me at 361 433-6039

electrical safety

The most important rule when working with electricity is making sure the electricity is off. The best way to do this is by turning off the main breaker,if you do not have a main .Go ahead and turn off the breakers located outside your house. All circuits should be checked with a meter before you start working on the circuit.A shock can be painful as well as deadly. If you do not have a meter you can also purchase sniffers, which are only about 10 dollars. The sniffer is best used on a lve circuit before checking if a circuit is off.

TOday i want to talk about ladder safety. When you use a ladder it is important to get the right size ladder for the job.If a ladder is to short there is a possibilty that you will have to stand on the last first or second step all of which are dangerous .If you are removing a fan or light fixture it is always a good idea to estimate the weight of the object you are taking down. The way to do this is , while the device is still hanging reach up and pick it up and feel its weight. That way it dors not suprise you whenever you remove it.Some Hunter fans can weigh 40 to 50 pounds and if you are not ready for it it could knock you off the ladder.Even a fall from a few feet can injure or kill you.Take a few minutes to think before you get on that ladder.
